Brühlsche Terasse affords fantastic views of the Elbe and the neighborhood of Neustadt on the opposite bank when journeying to the Hofkirche from the Albertinum. It is especially atmospheric in the early evening when most of the buildings are lit up. Goethe called it the “Balcony of Europe” but several of the buildings from his day were replaced at the end of the 19th century. The view is still impressive though.
Across the entrance to the Albertinum is the pleasure garden laid out by Count Brühl. Only the Dolphin Fountain and a group of sphinxes remain of his famous summerhouse, the Belvedere. An image in Meißen porcelain commemorates Johann Friedrich Böttger, who was imprisoned under orders to produce gold but discovered the secrets of porcelain production instead.
The steps at the monument for the architect Gottfried Semper lead to the remains of the Festung Dresden (Dresden Fortress), on George-Treu-Platz. This shows the bastions of the medieval city defenses.
The most beautiful building on the current Brühl Terrace is undoubtedly the Art Academy, with a distinctive glass cupola that is lit at night. It is locally known as the “lemon press.” Close by is the cream-colored Sekundogenitur, former residence of the second-born son to the ruling couple. It now houses a pleasant coffee shop. A monumental staircase, with bronze sculptures representing the four times of day, leads down to the Hofkirche and to the right the Augustus Bridge crossing the Elbe to Neustadt.
